What’s in a new Sewing Machine?

When I lived in Vermont, and only a year or so after buying my starter Bernette sewing machine, I went to the sew n vac guy I had taken other sewing machines to and I fell for a used Elna Air Electronic. That thing was awesome. Only problem is that it wasn’t a consistent awesome. It would work wonderfully one day and get stuck the next. I kept taking it in until we decided to move to Indianapolis. I knew I didn’t want to bring a lemon with me.

In the end, after trading in my Bernette for the Elna and then being given a basic Necchi, I was at the same point I was before I laid eyes on that used Elna.

Over the past year, it’s become obvious that I’m really ready for an upgrade on my little Necchi. It’s just not doing what it needs to do. Or, more accurately, I’m pushing it to its limit too often for it to be in a good home with me. I think it would be fine with another sewer who doesn’t sew very often.

I thought for about a week that we could afford a monthly payment toward a better sewing machine but I’m slowly waking up from my fantasy. It might be another year to two years before I can get a better machine and that’s just the reality.

In the meantime, I’m looking at the Juki HZL- F600 and the Pfaff Ambition 1.5.

The Ambition 1.5 is new so there aren’t that many reviews out there. The Juki F600 has really good reviews so if I base my first level of decision making on reviews, then a year or two would help me decide if the Juki and the Pfaff are on the same playing field.

Until then, I’ll be working on the little Necchi that could. And to start the year, or finish this one, who knows, I’m going to embark on the fun of making jackets. I’m starting with a jacket for my 3yo son followed by a jacket for myself.

Enjoy these last few days of 2011!

I have had exactly the same thoughts recently. I also love that Pfaff and I am going to save up for it. I did end up getting a Brother cs6100 from Amazon with some gift credit, since my Bernette kicked it. I’m going to track how it does — for $160, I hope it can perform!

I think I’m still gonna hop on the Pfaff Ambition in a couple of months to keep my money saving focused. 🙂 Awesome you got a new machine. I don’t know it but I looked it up on Amazon and I see you get 7 buttonhole options! That’s something I’m looking at the Juki for. I don’t know if the Ambition 1.5 has multiple buttonhole options but if it doesn’t, it’s gonna quickly be taken out of the running.

Awesome find. The price on your Brother looks like a steal.
