Thinking About Spring!

McCalls 6379

I bought this pattern thinking it would be perfect for where I am as a sewer. It’s got basic lines and I need something that’s quick and easy to sew since I spend so much time altering the bodice to fit. I had been thinking about this pattern and have been considering doing it up as a maxi dress. I did a little drawing and knew once I saw this fabric (below) that it would work for what I was trying to make. The photo on the right shows the fabric draped over my dress form so you can see the way the material folds.

On to another project I’m planning.

I’ve been thinking about what to do with the pin striped fabric on the left (below). It’s a very fine cord and it’s got a very nice feel. I took it to The French Seam in town and asked one of the owners to help me pair my fabric with something else so I could make coordinating pieces. She helped me find the middle piece and then a light weight denim.

Here’s a close-up of the middle fabric. I’m just loving this print!

So, what in the world am I going to do with these three fabrics?

The pin stripe cord is for this jacket:

The squares fabric will be for one of these vests.

And the lightweight denim will be for these slacks, probably the middle view:

As you can see, I’ve chosen really basic patterns to practice on. I’ve also included links from the pattern images to the reviews on Pattern Review, my go-to site when I’m thinking about sewing with a new pattern. It helps especially with patterns that are really poorly drafted or directions that are not helpful. It reminds you that people are putting these patterns together and there might be human error, other than my own, at play with my frustrations in the sewing room.

Lastly, here’s a red and white striped cotton print I picked up with the first print I showed you. I have no idea what to make with this but I’m sure it’ll come to me.

Good luck with your projects!! That first one (the red jacket illustration) is a MCalls 6170 right? I fell in love with that illustration and started this jacket last year but wasn’t going through my best moment in sewing and after a serie of blunders it sits in the end of a cabinet. I plan on finishing it this Spring.

Suzy, thanks. I’m eager to start but I still have a lot of fitting to deal with. The red jacket is McCalls 5759 but it’s soooo similar to 6170. There are subtle differences but you can really see that McCalls altered just a couple of details to change the pattern. I love both! Can’t wait to see your work. I always love it.

Wow- I love allo f these and a gold star to you for being able to plan so well- I flit from bright shiney object to the next and end up with a lot of pop pieces and no real wardrobe to speak of. I love the plaid for the 1st dress, too!
